In keeping with BMW’s method of indicating a new version of a carryover model, the R51 became the R51/2. The horizontally opposed layout had served BMW well prior to the war as well as during it, and the R75 sidecar unit was used in high numbers during the conflict. One carryover feature of the wartime R75 seen on the R51/2 was the split valve covers.
The Kompressor also featured bevel-driven overhead camshafts. The Dell’Orto carburetor on this example was fitted with an enormous velocity stack to direct oxygen into the engine.
