For both modal and nontonal music. Even a standard modulation to the dominant can pose problems in terms of deciding when to shift to a new "do" and when to use altered syllables. If a piece of music does not have a strong sense of "do," some of the benefits of movable "do" may be lost. " Fortunately, most of the singing done by choral musicians does rely on some form of tonality, and it could be argued that once a group is singing nontonal repertoire, they should no longer need a syllable system to help them read.

However, the historical and empirical evidence presented thus far does not seem to support any claim of methodological superiority. For that reason, this book does not endorse any one method of teaching music reading but instead seeks to present an overview of choices for the teacher to make. The information in this part is based on two underlying beliefs: 1. There is no single best way to teach sight-singing. 2. All sight-singing methods are a means to an end, not an end in themselves. There is no single best way to teach sight-singing.

It seems clear that there is not one method or material that guarantees success in teaching music reading. In fact, a positive attitude about sight-singing may be the most effective instructional tool. Based on the studies reviewed, teachers interested in increasing the effectiveness of choral training for developing sight-singing skills need to: 1) commit rehearsal time to teaching sightsinging, perhaps advocating its use in choral contests; 2) attempt to incorporate the benefits of both keyboard and instrumental training into a more comprehensive curriculum; and 3) make provisions for systematic individual evaluation of their students' ability.
